Bill Lawrence Discusses the Connections Between Dylan and Katie in Episode 6 of ‘Rooster’
SPOILER ALERT: This report contains spoilers for Rooster Episode 6, titled “Cop Hawk.”
Episode six of HBO Max’s Rooster, co-created by Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, continues to unravel the intricate connections among its characters. Throughout the series, audiences have been invited to explore the various ways loneliness manifests in their lives.
Lawrence elaborated on the shared experiences of Dylan (Danielle Deadwyler) and Katie (Charly Clive), both of whom confront unexpected challenges. He noted that Dylan expresses feelings of isolation despite being surrounded by people, emphasizing her struggle to find community. Katie’s journey also parallels this sentiment; upon starting at the school, she became entwined in a relationship, losing her sense of self along the way. Lawrence highlighted, “I mean, Dylan is much more successful in this show, you’ll see, in finding out that she wants to have a voice, and figuring out who she wants to be in the bigger scheme of things.”
As episode six concludes, viewers are left with two significant cliffhangers involving Dylan, as well as characters Greg Russo, portrayed by Steve Carell, Tommy, played by Maximo Salas, and Cristle, portrayed by Annie Mumolo.
L-R: Connie Britton & Danielle Deadwyler in ‘Rooster’
Dylan has adapted to her role as Interim Dean of Faculty, making the office her own. However, she faces the threat of being ousted as Dean Vincent Riggs, played by Alan Ruck, recovers from a recent heart attack and returns to reclaim his position.
Over the course of the season, Dylan has provided support to Katie as well as Greg’s daughter, navigating the challenges of Katie’s tumultuous marriage to Archie, whom she describes as narcissistic. Complicating matters, Archie has become involved with graduate student Sunny (Lauren Tsai), who is now pregnant with his child.
In a pivotal moment in the latest episode, Dylan tells Katie that she need not “watch this movie” unfolding between Archie and Sunny any longer, guiding Katie after witnessing her husband comforting his new partner. This dynamic is further complicated, as Katie and Archie are also sleeping together.

In a surprising turn of events, Greg finds himself in a compromising situation by the episode’s end, discovered in Cristle’s kitchen without pants by Tommy, one of his favored students. This revelation brings to light that Tommy is actually Cristle’s son, adding another layer to the unfolding narrative.
New episodes of Rooster premiere each Sunday at 7 p.m. ET/PT on HBO Max.
