FX Develops New Comedy Pilot ‘Hopeless’
FX has announced the early development of a new comedy pilot titled Hopeless, created by Jeff Chan, known for Plus One, and Rob Mac, co-creator of Welcome to Wrexham. The project is being produced in collaboration with 20th Television.
Hopeless explores the tumultuous romance between two individuals, ignited when one of them uses the other’s phone number as a fake contact while out at bars.
Rob Mac, alongside Jackie Cohn, will serve as executive producers through More Better Productions, with Nick Frenkel also attached as an executive producer representing 3 Arts.
FX has recently seen success with Mac’s series Welcome to Wrexham, which was renewed for a fifth season shortly after the premiere of its fourth season. Additionally, the network aired its first season of Necaxa, a docuseries focused on the eponymous soccer team, although a second season for that series has yet to be confirmed. Mac is also well-known for his involvement in the long-running FX sitcom It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, where he serves as both star and executive producer.
Looking ahead, Mac is set to executive produce and star in the upcoming FX series Far Cry, which is based on the popular video game franchise by Ubisoft. While a release date has not been announced, work in the writers’ room is progressing.
Jeff Chan, a writer and director, has an impressive resume that includes directing episodes for Netflix’s XO, Kitty, Prime Video’s The Summer I Turned Pretty, and the CW’s Kung Fu. His feature debut, Plus One, premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival. Chan is currently developing an original film for Netflix and is represented by WME, Iconoclast, and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
