Dwayne Johnson and Catherine Laga’aia Journey into Disney’s Live-Action Moana Trailer
Disney Unveils Official Trailer for Live-Action "Moana" Set for Summer Release
Disney has officially released the trailer for its highly anticipated live-action adaptation of "Moana," originally a hit animated film from 2016. The film is scheduled to hit theaters worldwide on July 10, 2026.
Catherine Laga’aia takes on the titular role, previously voiced by Auli’i Cravalho, while Dwayne Johnson returns to reprise his role as the demigod Maui, this time with a wig. The cast also features John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina, and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
Directed by Thomas Kail, the film promises a blend of original songs from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Opetaia Foaʻi, and Mark Mancina, alongside Mancina’s original score.
The trailer offers a first glimpse into Moana’s journey as she answers the ocean’s call, embarking beyond the reef of her island of Motunui alongside Maui. The narrative explores themes of courage and community, featuring the amusing yet menacing Kakamora tribe.
In addition to Laga’aia and Johnson, the film includes John Tui voicing Chief Tui, Moana’s pragmatic father, along with Frankie Adams and Rena Owen in pivotal roles.
"Moana" is produced by an impressive team that includes Johnson, Beau Flynn, Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia, and Lin-Manuel Miranda, who also created original songs for the animated film. Kail serves as an executive producer along with Scott Sheldon, Charles Newirth, and Auli’i Cravalho, the original voice of Moana.
This latest adaptation is poised to build on the success of the animated original, which grossed $643 million globally and sparked a billion-dollar sequel set for release in 2024.
