Jon Bon Jovi Reflects on First Music Contract
In a recent Instagram post, rock star Jon Bon Jovi shared a significant milestone from his early career: his first music contract, signed in 1980. The contract was related to the Star Wars-themed holiday album, Christmas in the Stars.
On December 9, Bon Jovi, now 63, showcased a photo of the contract, which reveals that he was paid a mere $180 for his contributions. The agreement, signed by renowned music producer Meco Monardo, detailed services for the album, which was produced in connection with the iconic Star Wars franchise.
“I was a gopher in a recording studio from the fall of 1980 until ’83, when we did the first record,” Bon Jovi reflected during an April 2024 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live. He described how his involvement with the album came about unexpectedly. Monardo was producing tribute records inspired by the Star Wars phenomenon and offered Bon Jovi a chance to sing on the project.
The album, released in 1980, primarily featured Anthony Daniels, the actor known for portraying C-3PO, but it also included Bon Jovi’s first professional recording, "R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas."
In a light-hearted moment during the Kimmel interview, Bon Jovi was asked if he remembered the title of the song, to which he responded, “Hell yeah. ‘R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas.’"
While his debut on the Star Wars album marked a unique beginning, it was the song "Runaway" that launched Bon Jovi to fame. He recalled delivering the cassette to a DJ, both convinced it would be a hit. The song eventually became the band’s first top 40 single, setting the stage for what would become a monumental career. Today, Bon Jovi’s band has sold over 130 million albums and continues to thrive, with their 16th studio album released in 2024.
