Luka Shines with 60 Points in Lakers’ Win Over the Heat
Luka Scores 60; LeBron Ties Record
In a remarkable display of skill and perseverance, LeBron James recorded a triple-double as the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 134-126 on Thursday night. James, at 41 years old, notched 19 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his status as the oldest player in NBA history to achieve a triple-double.
On the same evening, Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks made headlines by scoring a season-high 60 points, dominating the court with a strong finish that included 20 points in the fourth quarter. This win brought the Lakers their eighth consecutive victory, solidifying their position with a record of 45-25.
James, who played in his 1,611th regular-season game, tied NBA legend Robert Parish for the most games played. Reflecting on James’s impressive performance, Lakers coach J.J. Redick said, “He’s a psycho,” expressing admiration for his veteran player’s relentless drive.
Both James and Doncic faced concerns about their health prior to the game. Doncic was dealing with soreness in his right hip, while James was managing left foot arthritis. Austin Reaves, another key player, also had fitness issues. Nonetheless, the three players made a collective decision in the locker room after Wednesday’s match against Houston to take the court against Miami.
“When he said he was playing, I was like, I can’t let a 41-year-old play and I not play,” remarked Reaves, who overcame a forearm contusion to finish the game with 18 points. “So [I] signed up to play and so did Luka, and we went and grinded the win out.”
Clippers Fall to Pelicans
In another NBA matchup, the New Orleans Pelicans secured a 105-99 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, extending their home winning streak to seven games. Trey Murphy III scored 27 points, leading the Pelicans to their second consecutive win against the Clippers.
Saddiq Bey contributed with 20 points, and Zion Williamson added another 15, helping the team sweep the two-game series. The Clippers, still seeking momentum, faced challenges with key players. Dejounte Murray was rested as part of his recovery from an Achilles injury but had a notable performance in Wednesday’s loss.
Derrick Jones Jr. led the Clippers with 22 points, while John Collins and Bogdan Bogdanovic contributed 18 and 16 points, respectively. Unfortunately, this loss marked the Clippers’ fourth straight defeat.
Kings Lose to Flyers
In NHL action, the Philadelphia Flyers triumphed 4-3 over the Los Angeles Kings in a shootout. Trevor Zegras and Matvei Michkov scored during the shootout, leading the Flyers to their fourth victory in five games.
Noah Cates starred for the Flyers with a goal and an assist, while Samuel Ersson completed 22 saves, keeping the Flyers’ playoff hopes alive as they remain six points away from the critical wild-card spots.
The Kings, despite their loss, still hold a place in the Western Conference playoffs, having moved into the second wild-card spot earlier.
USC Reaches Settlement
In a significant legal resolution, the University of Southern California has settled a lawsuit with Joyce Bell Limbrick, a former high-ranking athletic department official. Limbrick alleged that USC allowed racial harassment and discrimination by former athletic director Mike Bohn before her termination.
Limbrick, who was the highest-ranking Black woman in USC’s athletic department, filed the lawsuit following her dismissal in September 2023, shortly after Bohn resigned amid an internal investigation.
The terms of the settlement have not been disclosed.
