Lizzo has announced the upcoming release of her unreleased track “Don’t Make Me Love U,” revealing the news on social media Wednesday (March 18) with a captivating video.
In the video, a camera circles Lizzo as she dances alongside her doppelgänger, who gazes ahead in beige spandex and stilettos. The track plays in the background, accompanied by offscreen shouts of encouragement. The lyrics, including “Don’t make me love you if you’re just gonna change your mind,” set the tone for the performance.
“THE NEW NATIONAL ANTHEM ‘DON’T MAKE ME LOVE U,’” Lizzo captioned the clip. “THIS FRIDAY. GET READYYYYY.”
The Grammy-winning artist had previously previewed “Don’t Make Me Love U” while appearing on Late Night With Seth Meyers in February, where she sang a few bars a cappella. Her last musical release was “Freak Show” in October, following the June mixtape My Face Hurts From Smiling, which featured collaborations with SZA and Doja Cat.
Initially, Lizzo aimed to release an album titled Love in Real Life, but she shifted her focus after the singles “Still Bad” and “Love in Real Life” did not perform well on the Billboard Hot 100. Lizzo has previously topped this chart with hits like “Truth Hurts” and “About Damn Time.”
“By 2025, I’ve changed, the world has changed so much, and so much has happened,” she explained during a September interview with Vulture, noting that most of the shelved album was written in 2022. “It just wasn’t what I was feeling right now. I was like, ‘I need to do s–t differently, and I don’t know what it is, but I’m going to just start following my instincts.’”
Lizzo is also coming off recent mini residencies at the Blue Note jazz clubs in Los Angeles and New York City, in addition to announcing her upcoming children’s book, Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’.
