Ben Watkins Shares Insights on the Original Ending of Season 2 of ‘Cross’ Before the Changes
Season 2 of Prime Video’s Cross concluded with unexpected changes that altered its original storyline. The season finale, which aired on March 18, portrayed protagonist Alex (Aldis Hodge) grappling with a significant decision following the apparent death of Luz (Jeanine Mason), though the narrative hints that she may still be alive.
As the storyline unfolded, Alex faced dilemma after dilemma. Betrayed by Kayla (Alona Tal), struggling with a breakup from Elle (Samantha Walkes), and uncertain about his future as a detective, he ultimately decided to turn in his badge, leaving viewers questioning what lies ahead for him.
In a recent interview, creator Ben Watkins shared insights about this pivotal plot change. “I originally did not plan that at all,” he explained. “But that is a great example of being willing to let the story take you to where it’s going.” Watkins revealed that the decision to alter Alex’s trajectory was not easy, as he grappled with the implications of having a detective surrender his badge.
“I had to now call the network and say, ‘This show about Alex Cross — a detective — now is him turning in his badge at the end of season 2,’” Watkins recalled. He emphasized the importance of authenticity in storytelling, stating, “If I’m really going to be honest about the decision Alex would make, then he would turn in his badge.”
Looking ahead, Watkins hinted at how Alex’s choice could shape Season 3. “That would be so compelling to bring him back because anybody who watches season 2 will understand why he felt he had to turn his badge in. There are very valid reasons and questions regarding the conflicts he has been dealing with,” he stated. Watkins concluded that presenting a compelling reason for Alex’s return offers exciting opportunities for future storytelling.
Cross, which premiered in 2024, is adapted from James Patterson’s Alex Cross novel series. The show follows forensic psychologist and D.C. Metro Detective Alex Cross as he pursues some of America’s most dangerous killers, all while protecting his family.
The cast includes Hodge, Tal, Walkes, Mason, alongside Isaiah Mustafa, Juanita Jennings, Caleb Elijah, Melody Hurd, Matthew Lillard, and Jennifer Wigmore. Currently, Cross is available for streaming on Prime Video.
