Conan O’Brien Lightheartedly Bids Farewell to Oscar Hosting in a Fun Post-Ceremony Comedy Skit with a Surprise New Host
Sean Penn’s Absence at Oscars Highlighted by Conan O’Brien’s Creative Tribute
Sean Penn’s absence from the Academy Awards did not go unnoticed, particularly following his third Oscar win for One Battle After Another. Although Penn was not present, his character, Steven J. Lockjaw, made a notable cameo of sorts through a pre-recorded segment featuring host Conan O’Brien.
The comedic skit, which can be viewed above, served as a humorous farewell from O’Brien as Oscars host, with popular YouTube star Mr. Beast poised to take over this role for the next ceremony.
This year marked O’Brien’s second consecutive stint as host of the Academy Awards. While ABC reportedly does not have an option to renew his contract for next year, O’Brien’s strong performance has led to speculation that the network may seek to bring him back.
The skit creatively reimagined Lockjaw’s dramatic final scene from One Battle After Another, depicting the villainous military officer’s acceptance into a secretive white supremacist group known as the Christmas Adventurers Club. In this grim turn of events, Lockjaw is escorted to his new office, where he meets a fatal end.
In a playful twist, Jim Downey, reprising his role as club member Sandy Irvine, approaches O’Brien in the mock sketch, praising him for the evening’s performance and declaring, "in fact, we liked it so much, we’ve decided to make you Oscars host for life." The parody follows the same trajectory as the film, with O’Brien’s nameplate designated for "Host for Life" humorously swapped out for Mr. Beast as O’Brien’s character is carted away and incinerated.
Mr. Beast, whose real name is James Stephen Donaldson, embraced the moment by sharing the door sign from the sketch on his social media, complete with a playful face emoji on his Instagram story.
O’Brien also took to Instagram, expressing his appreciation with a post stating, “An honor to be reunited with my mentor, Jim Downey,” alongside a clip from the segment.
