Hulu Greenlights New Drama Pilot ‘Durango’ from Eliza Clark, the Showrunner of ‘Y: The Last Man’
Hulu has announced a new addition to its lineup, greenlighting the drama Durango, written by Eliza Clark, known for her work on FX’s Y: The Last Man. This project is a collaboration between 20th Television and Media Res.
In recent years, the streaming industry has seen a shift towards straight-to-series orders, but Hulu is returning to a more traditional approach by emphasizing pilot episodes. Approximately a year and a half ago, the platform adjusted its strategy, making pilots the standard and reserving direct-to-series orders for select projects, such as Dan Fogelman’s upcoming NFL drama The Land and Mindy Kaling’s comedy Not Suitable For Work, along with limited series.
The embrace of pilots extends across Disney’s various networks, including ABC, FX, Onyx, and Disney Branded Television, in addition to Hulu, which currently features several projects in development, including Greg Berlanti and Bash Doran’s Foster Dade.
Instead of adhering to a traditional pilot season, Hulu has opted to introduce a limited number of pilots throughout the year. This strategy is expected to continue, with Durango being followed by up to two additional pilot orders.
Durango centers on Mikey, a ski bum navigating life in a small town, and Bunny, a homeschooled runaway working as a waitress. The two characters find themselves entangled in a whirlwind of poor decisions and romance, all while evading law enforcement, criminals, and Mikey’s wife in their quest for the American dream.
Eliza Clark will also serve as an executive producer alongside Media Res’ Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer. Clark has a strong track record in the industry, having developed and executive produced the adaptation of FX’s Y: The Last Man and served as showrunner for TNT’s Animal Kingdom. Her experience also includes work on AMC’s The Killing and Rubicon, as well as CBS’ Extant.
