Cutter Gauthier Shines with Two Goals in Ducks’ Win Over Islanders
Cutter Gauthier made a significant impact for the Anaheim Ducks, scoring two early goals as the team defeated the New York Islanders 5-1 on Wednesday night. Backup goalie Ville Husso delivered a standout performance, stopping 42 shots and contributing to the Ducks’ impressive run, marking their 13th win in the last 16 games.
The game began with a quick lead for the Islanders as Anders Lee netted his 304th career goal, tying Clark Gillies for the fourth-most in franchise history, just 4:58 into the first period. However, the Ducks responded decisively, scoring three goals within the final minutes of the opening period to take control. Gauthier sparked the comeback with a power-play goal, followed by another score from the 22-year-old Swede, which brought his season total to 31 goals. Beckett Sennecke also contributed with a close-range finish, marking his 20th goal of the season.
Despite outshooting the Ducks 43-25, the Islanders struggled to find the net, especially after failing to capitalize on three power-play opportunities in the second period. David Rittich recorded 20 saves for New York, but the Ducks’ defense, led by Husso, proved resilient.
Husso faced a barrage of shots late in the game when the Islanders pulled Rittich with 8½ minutes remaining. Frank Vatrano, returning from an upper-body injury, sealed the victory with an empty-net goal with 4:11 left on the clock.
The Ducks maintained their lead throughout, with Ryan Poehling scoring a backhand tip-in early in the third period, extending their advantage to 4-1. The Islanders, who previously overcame 2-0 deficits in their last three matches, could not mount a comeback against the Ducks’ strong performance.
