Amy Madigan, Award-Winning Actress from ‘Weapons,’ Compares Her Trophy to a Ken Doll and Celebrates Unions: “They’re Not Going to Bust Us”
Aunt Gladys Wins Actor Award at Recent Ceremony
Aunt Gladys, portrayed by Amy Madigan, received an Actor Award at the recent ceremony, a recognition that Orlando Bloom highlighted when he introduced the Outstanding Supporting Actress category, humorously noting her ability to “terrorize a suburb in a wig and a tracksuit.”
Taking the stage, Madigan showcased the memorable "Weapons" run demonstrated by the children in the film. This marks both her first win and nomination for an Actor Award.
Reflecting on her lengthy career, Madigan expressed her gratitude, stating, “I’ve been doing this a long ass time, and I have never been nominated by the SAG committee, and by the guild. I’m a proud member, and I keep getting asked tonight, ‘Well, what is it about this night?’ And I said, ‘Because actors love other actors. They just love being with them. We want to be working with them. We want to look up at them and just go, man, you guys are so good.’” She added, “I’m a union person. I come from Chicago, and everybody in my family: all my friends, relatives — we’re all union people. And I don’t care what somebody says, they’re not going to bust us ever.”
Madigan expressed her surprise at the honor and acknowledged her fellow cast members from "Weapons," including Julia Garner, Josh Brolin, Alden Ehrenreich, and others, emphasizing that it was truly a team effort.
Reflecting on her role’s challenges, she noted, “I did terrorize them, but I let them rip me apart, so it was okay. It truly is the ensemble. And I just want to thank, of course, Zach Cregger, for this great honor.” Her speech also included a nod to Allison Jones, who played a crucial role in assembling the cast amid the disruptions caused by COVID and industry strikes.
As she accepted the Actor trophy, Madigan humorously likened the experience to childhood memories involving a Barbie and Ken doll. “Let’s see, what does he have here?” she stated, adding, “When you were little, and you had the Barbie and then you got Ken, and you whipped down his drawers and you went, ‘Ken has nothing!’”
Admitting her nervousness, she concluded, “I really am digressing. I apologize. As you can tell, I’m nervous and I’m just overwhelmed and so happy. Thank you, everybody, so much.”
Fans can anticipate more of Gladys in an upcoming prequel centered on the character, further establishing her place in the narrative.
