Maxi Shield, Beloved Star of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under,’ Passes Away at 51
Maxi Shield, the Sydney-based star of Australia’s RuPaul’s Drag Race Down Under, passed away over the weekend at the age of 51, following a six-month battle with throat cancer.
Known offstage as Kristopher Elliot, Shield had been open about her cancer diagnosis and treatment journey on Instagram. Reports suggest she died on Saturday, February 21, with the news confirmed today by World of Wonder, the producer behind the RuPaul’s Drag Race franchise.
“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of Kristopher Elliot AKA Maxi Shield,” the company stated on Instagram. “A part of our Down Under legacy, her electrifying presence on and off the stage will inspire us forever. Our deepest condolences go out to her friends and family. RIP, we love you Maxi.”
The specific cause of death has not been disclosed.
In her final Instagram post on January 30, Shield expressed optimism about her recovery. “Weekly update-ish. We are stronger we think!” she wrote. “This is my 29th day since my last treatment…each day I’m feeling a little better…to anyone out there going through this or even recently being diagnosed, you are stronger than you know…”
The news of her passing was also shared by friend and Down Under co-star Vanity. “It’s with the heaviest of hearts that we share the news that our dearest sister, Maxine, has passed away,” Vanity posted on her Wigs By Vanity page. “Thank you for the laughs, the cackles, and the magic you brought into our lives. You will be forever loved and deeply missed.”
Shield was a contestant on the inaugural season of the Australian edition of Drag Race, where she placed sixth. She also featured in the 2023 Australian comedy thriller The Winner Takes It All and was a regular performer in Sydney’s LGBTQ+ venues. She garnered a dedicated following for her candid discussions about her health struggles, sobriety, and childhood experiences.
Judge Michelle Visage from Drag Race Down Under commemorated Shield on Instagram, stating, “A glorious human on the inside and out. Your love, heart, talent and energy will be missed…. @maxishield rest in power, my angel, you were truly one of a kind.”
Born in Ballina, New South Wales, on June 1, 1974, Shield’s career highlights included performing at the closing ceremony of the 2000 Olympic Games and opening the Gay Games in 2002. She also made an appearance at RuPaul’s DragCon LA in 2022.
