USA Men’s Hockey Team Celebrates First Gold Medal in Over 40 Years with Win Against Canada
Team USA has broken a 46-year losing streak in Olympic men’s hockey, securing a victory over Canada during a thrilling match in Milan on Sunday.
In a dramatic overtime finish, Jack Hughes led the U.S. to a 2-1 triumph, netting the decisive goal. This win marks the first gold medal for Team USA in men’s hockey since 1980, when they famously defeated the Soviet Union.
“This is all about our country right now,” Hughes stated in an interview with NBC following the victory. “I love the USA, I love my teammates. It’s unbelievable. The USA Hockey brotherhood is so strong. We have so much support from our players. I’m so proud to be American today.”
Matt Boldy contributed to Team USA’s score in the first period, while Canada’s Cale Makar responded with a goal in the second period.

Reflecting on this historic moment, 1980 Olympic captain Mike Eruzione remarked, “This is it. It’s over for us. This is their team. This is their time,” echoing the pride felt within the hockey community.
The legendary 1980 match, known as the “Miracle on Ice,” was dramatized in Disney’s 2004 film Miracle, featuring Kurt Russell as Coach Herb Brooks and Patrick O’Brien Demsey portraying Eruzione.
