Melissa McCarthy Returns to SNL
Melissa McCarthy made her sixth hosting appearance on Saturday Night Live on December 6, captivating the audience with her unique blend of humor and physical comedy. The 55-year-old actress donned a striking black velvet jumpsuit and showcased her skills in a whimsical segment featuring a “mouth horn” during her opening monologue.
In her opening remarks, McCarthy appealed to the festive spirit, suggesting the addition of some artificial snow to enhance the holiday atmosphere. "We could all use a little Christmas magic. So how about we put a little bit of snow to get us in the holiday mood?" she stated just before a flurry of faux snow descended from the studio ceiling. "This is SNL. Don’t be stingy with the snow!"
Her playful request led to her becoming engulfed in the artificial snowstorm. "Okay, that was way too much," she remarked while humorously blowing faux snowflakes from her mouth.
During the monologue’s "mouth horn and piano duet" segment, McCarthy was joined by cast member Marcello Hernandez, dressed as one of Santa’s elves. An unexpected mishap occurred when Hernandez, trying to align the piano stage, accidentally toppled McCarthy over the bench, leading to a comical moment as she screamed in mock pain after having her hands crushed against the keys.
"Now I’ve ruined Christmas," McCarthy quipped while still seated over the piano. Kenan Thompson, also part of the skit, reassured her, saying, "Oh, nonsense, Melissa McCarthy. Come on, you haven’t ruined Christmas at all. Everyone here loves you. Now, why don’t we do one of your favorite Christmas songs?"
Following this segment, McCarthy adopted a series of colorful characters, including an angry UPS driver, a Southern mother in a daring game of truth or dare, and an eccentric co-creator of a sizable Christmas village in Yonkers.
In a reflection shared in June 2023, McCarthy recalled her debut appearance on the show in 2011, where she portrayed Linda, an over-the-top ranch aficionado. In an interview, she admitted, "I didn’t actually gulp down any Hidden Valley Ranch," emphasizing that her performance was all in good fun.

"When I think about it, I kinda really love ranch," she reflected, noting that they had used a probiotic yogurt drink while filming. "So I don’t know that I couldn’t have just [drank ranch dressing]… but there’s a lot of logistics to that."
Furthermore, she revealed that she had originally developed the character long before it became a staple on the SNL stage, recalling, "At the time, I was like, ‘This will be a great idea.’ And then doing it three times a week, I was like, ‘Hmmm, this is difficult to get down the third time.’"
