James Van Der Beek, Star of Dawson’s Creek, Dies at 48 After Cancer Battle
James Van Der Beek, best known for his role as Dawson Leery in the hit television series Dawson’s Creek, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 48 after a prolonged battle with colorectal cancer. The news was confirmed by his family via social media.
Van Der Beek publicly announced his cancer diagnosis in November 2024, shedding light on his health struggles.
“Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning,” his family shared on Instagram. “He met his final days with courage, faith, and grace. There is much to share regarding his wishes, love for humanity and the sacredness of time. Those days will come. For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother, and friend.”
In his recent updates, Van Der Beek mentioned auctioning memorabilia from Dawson’s Creek and Varsity Blues to help cover medical expenses. He also withdrew from a one-night reunion of Dawson’s Creek intended to benefit his health, with Lin-Manuel Miranda stepping in for the live stage reading of the show’s pilot.
In addition, Van Der Beek was set to appear in Prime Video’s upcoming prequel series Elle, based on Legally Blonde, where he was cast as a mayoral candidate.
Born on March 8, 1977, in Cheshire, Connecticut, Van Der Beek began his career at the age of 16, debuting off-Broadway in Edward Albee’s Finding the Sun. His breakout role came in 1997 with Dawson’s Creek, which became a cultural phenomenon. The series, which aired from 1998 to 2003, not only launched his career but also propelled the careers of co-stars Katie Holmes, Joshua Jackson, and Michelle Williams.
Van Der Beek’s performance in Dawson’s Creek won him a place in teen pop culture, with the show achieving record ratings and becoming the top-rated series among young audiences during its run. Netflix’s pickup of the series in 2020 introduced it to a new generation.
Reflecting on his portrayal of Dawson, Van Der Beek once humorously noted that part of his inspiration for the character came from The Phantom of the Opera, citing a similar emotional struggle over love.
His film career included notable roles in Varsity Blues and The Rules of Attraction, both of which have since gained cult status. Beyond television and film, Van Der Beek also lent his voice to the character Boris Hauntley in Disney Channel’s Vampirina.
In addition to his extensive work in film and television, he made guest appearances on notable series including Modern Family, Law & Order, and How I Met Your Mother. His diverse portfolio showcased his range as both an actor and voice artist.
Van Der Beek is survived by his wife of over 25 years, Kimberly, and their six children. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with the family’s living expenses during this challenging time.
