S.W.A.T. Exiles Finishes Production Without U.S. Release: Insights into Sony’s Distribution Strategy Amid Competition and The Hunting Wives
Filming Concludes for S.W.A.T. Exiles, Awaiting Network Commitment
Filming is set to conclude today on S.W.A.T. Exiles, the highly anticipated spinoff of Sony Pictures Television’s acclaimed crime drama, which enjoyed an eight-season run on CBS. The spinoff, featuring S.W.A.T. star Shemar Moore, was first announced at the 2025 LA Screenings in May but has yet to secure a network or platform for U.S. distribution.
A significant development will occur tomorrow as the series prepares for its first episode screening on February 11, 2026, at the Sony lot in Culver City, California. A screening in New York is also planned. International buyers will have the chance to preview the series during the London Screenings on February 26, with more than 600 attendees already RSVP’d. Moore is expected to attend both events.
The decision to delay securing a U.S. distributor was influenced by both necessity and strategy. Sony TV aimed to maintain creative control while waiting for the right opportunities, a move that could prove advantageous. The recent successes of The Hunting Wives on Netflix and HBO Max’s Heated Rivalry, both acquired post-production, have opened new avenues for distribution.
With initial interest from Fox and Prime Video during the announcement period, the competitive landscape has since expanded. Netflix and HBO Max are reportedly seeking quality, cost-effective programming, driven by changes in the content landscape that favor the emergence of new cable groups. The newly formed Versant is actively looking for lower-cost scripted originals, and Warner Bros. Discovery is also considering spinoffs from its cable networks, including TNT.
Katherine Pope, President of Sony Pictures Television Studios, commented on the evolving market, stating, “I actually feel like, timing wise, there’s probably more potential avenues than there were in May.”
S.W.A.T. Exiles, led by showrunner Jason Ning, centers on Hondo (Moore), who is called back from forced retirement to lead an experimental SWAT unit composed of untested recruits following a critical mission failure. The series will also feature original stars such as Jay Harrington and Patrick St. Esprit in guest roles.
Following the announcement, Sony TV successfully navigated negotiations in several major markets, partnering with both existing platforms airing S.W.A.T. and new ones. Domestically, however, buyers have adopted a cautious approach, opting to wait while Sony TV proceeded with production.
After a period without firm offers, the studio decided to shift focus from sales efforts to production, confident in the cast and script quality. "We started feeling really good about the cast. We started feeling great about the scripts,” Pope remarked. “We’re like, you know what? We’re going to have something, and it’s going to be better. The buyers are going to be able to actually see and feel it. There is really nothing to substitute for having a season.”
The studio has also secured a $15.7 million tax credit for filming in Los Angeles. Sources indicate that S.W.A.T. Exiles has a budget comparable to its CBS predecessor, aiming to cultivate new stars among its youthful cast.
With production complete, Sony TV intends to provide subsequent episode screenings to prospective buyers. The studio has left the possibility open for both market-by-market sales and a global deal that may align with local agreements already established.
Mike Wald, co-President of Sony TV Distribution, emphasized the strategic timing: “By doing that, making that decision, we were in complete control of our timing and our process, so there was no rush. And the idea all along was to do this right, take our time, and make sure we find the right home in every single market around the world.”
Sony TV has previously employed this strategy successfully with series like Absentia and Alex Rider, paving the way for potential new opportunities in the competitive television landscape.
