Teyana Taylor recently made her debut as host on Saturday Night Live, bringing along her daughters, Rue Rose, 5, and Iman "Junie" Tayla, 10. During her opening monologue, Taylor humorously addressed a universal challenge for parents: children engrossed in their cell phones.
“I really, really love my kids so much, so I bring them everywhere with me. I ain’t even gonna front," she shared. Reflecting on her experience at the Golden Globes, she noted, "I looked up to see my babies — just to see that they were scrolling on their phones. So I’m like, ‘This is so amazing. Get off them phones. What an honor. Get off them phones.’"
Taylor expressed gratitude for her career achievements, saying, "I feel so lucky. I’ve worked so hard throughout my career to get to this point, and I’m just so grateful to be here with my babies cheering me on.” The moment was lightheartedly underscored as the camera revealed her daughters still glued to their devices.
With numerous accolades this awards season—including a Critics Choice nomination and a Golden Globe win for her role in One Battle After Another—Taylor’s success continues to resonate not only professionally but personally as well. She is also nominated for Best R&B Album at the upcoming Grammy Awards for Escape Room.
During her acceptance speech at the Golden Globes on January 11, she humorously urged her children, who were reportedly watching from upstairs, to be attentive: “Y’all better be off those damn phones and watching me right now.”
Taylor shares her daughters with ex-husband Iman Shumpert, and she recently discussed their co-parenting relationship in a profile with Vanity Fair. Reflecting on the complexities of divorce, she stated, “Divorce, to me, is you’re grieving the death of a living being. I think once children are involved, you understand the importance of really still having to show up for each other.”
She added, “At least for the next 18 years, and being the best co-parents that we can be," while emphasizing her desire to encourage a positive view of marriage.

In September 2023, Taylor confirmed her separation from Shumpert after seven years of marriage. She clarified that while they are no longer together, their friendship and co-parenting efforts remain strong, stating, “To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure. We are still the best of friends, great business partners and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our 2 beautiful children.”
