Savannah Guthrie Shares Emotional Recovery Journey Following Vocal Surgery
Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the Today show, revealed her emotional journey recovering from vocal surgery in a segment aired on January 23, 2026. During the broadcast, she broke down in tears after hearing her voice for the first time following a week of post-surgery vocal rest.
In the segment, the 54-year-old explained how her voice had become increasingly “scratchier," significantly affecting her ability to speak during hosting duties. Following her concerns, she consulted voice specialist Dr. Peak Woo. He diagnosed her with a “hemorrhagic polyp”—a ruptured blood vessel—on one side of her vocal cords, along with a “vocal nodule” resulting from overuse on the other side. Dr. Woo recommended microlaryngeal surgery, a precise procedure performed under general anesthesia to remove the growths.
“We use instruments about the size of an ant’s head to carefully remove the polyp portion, while preserving the surrounding tissue so it should be able to vibrate,” Dr. Woo explained to Today.
Guthrie faced what she labeled the “toughest assignment” of her life during recovery: remaining silent. Despite the challenges, she expressed her feelings through writing, noting “I’m happy” on a piece of paper after her surgery.
A week later, Guthrie visited Dr. Woo’s office for a check-up, where he used a numbing spray to guide a tiny camera up her nose, examining the healing of her vocal cords. He encouraged her to try speaking for the first time, prompting her to say, “Good morning, today is Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2026. I am using my voice for the first time and it sounds [so] good I could cry.” Overwhelmed with emotion, she hugged the doctor and wept.
“Once again, I was speechless. [I was] so grateful,” she reflected in a voiceover.
Dr. Woo expressed the emotional nature of voice restoration, stating, “the voice is really an expression of your soul, and when you suddenly restore it and see that it’s possible, then it can be emotional.”
However, Guthrie’s journey wasn’t yet complete. She highlighted the importance of vocal therapy in getting her voice “back in shape.” This ongoing therapy is crucial not only for preserving her voice but also for strengthening it.
Guthrie announced on December 19, 2025, that she would be taking a break from Today, and she is scheduled to return on January 26, 2026.
Reflecting on her silence during recovery, she shared, “It was hard at first. You had to get the hang of silence and solitude and being alone with yourself. It actually can be kind of terrifying, but I found it to be a beautiful moment—spiritual moment.”
When asked if her voice had fully returned, she affirmed, “yes,” but noted that she plans to be “more careful” going forward. She intends to incorporate vocal rest into her daily routine following her broadcasts and continues with daily vocal therapy.
Guthrie also mentioned the supportive reaction from her family, including her husband, Michael Feldman, and her two children, Vale and Max. “They’re like, ‘Oh great, you can talk again,’” she said, adding that they are thrilled to hear her voice once more.
