Joseph Fiennes to Reprise Role as Gareth Southgate in "Dear England"
Joseph Fiennes will reprise his acclaimed role as England soccer manager Gareth Southgate in the upcoming television adaptation of Dear England. The first images from the series have been released, coinciding with the World Cup draw.
In the newly released photos, Fiennes is seen celebrating and navigating the press, drawing attention to the emotional highs and lows associated with leadership in sports. He previously earned an Olivier Award nomination for his portrayal of Southgate in James Graham’s stage play of the same name.
The images also feature fellow cast members, including Will Antenbring as England captain Harry Kane, and Jodie Whittaker, who takes on the role of team psychologist Pippa Grange.
Dear England boasts a talented ensemble, with Jason Watkins portraying FA chairman Greg Dyke alongside returning actors from the stage production. The play itself garnered significant acclaim as a dramatized account of the England football team’s struggles and triumphs, rooted in extensive research and interviews. Southgate, facing a notorious record of penalty failures when he assumed management, is depicted as determined to overcome historic challenges and guide the team to success. Under his leadership, England has transitioned from early exits in tournaments to reaching two finals and a semifinal in major competitions.
The series was developed by Graham, who created the original play based on an open letter that Southgate penned to soccer fans nationwide. Produced by Left Bank, known for their work on The Crown, Dear England is set to air next year.
Notable behind-the-scenes talent includes Rupert Goold, who directed the stage adaptation and will direct the first episode of the series, with Paul Whittington set to direct the following episodes. The series is produced by Tina Pawlik, with executive production from Graham, Goold, Andy Harries, Rebecca Hodgson for Left Bank, and Jo McClellan for the BBC. Sony Pictures Television will handle international distribution.
