San Francisco Celebrates Bob Weir with Heartfelt Homecoming Event
Bob Weir Commemoration Set for San Francisco
The late Grateful Dead legend Bob Weir will be honored in his hometown of San Francisco this weekend with a special public event dedicated to his life and contributions to music.
“Homecoming: Celebrating the Life of Bobby Weir,” a free gathering, is scheduled for Saturday, January 17, at Civic Center Plaza, starting at 3:45 PM ET.
According to organizers, the event will focus on “gratitude, remembrance, and togetherness.” Attendees can expect special tributes to Weir, who passed away last week at the age of 78 due to underlying lung issues after a battle with cancer. Weir was a beloved figure and one of San Francisco’s treasured sons.
“Homecoming” aims to reflect on Weir’s impact, with organizers stating, “music, spirit, and humanity shaped a generation. Together, we will pay tribute in the community and collective heartbeat that he created.”
Though the event will not feature live performances, it will include a procession along Market Street, covering three blocks between 7th and 9th Streets at approximately 3:30 PM ET.
As a guitarist and co-founder of the Grateful Dead, Weir played a pivotal role in shaping the band from their early days as the Warlocks to icons of the jam band genre. His innovative guitar style was instrumental in establishing the band’s unique sound, which captivated audiences for decades. Throughout his six-decade career, the Grateful Dead performed over 2,300 concerts and sold more than 35 million albums, remaining a vital force in music until Jerry Garcia’s death in 1995.
After the band disbanded, Weir continued to contribute to music through various projects, including Furthur and Dead & Company. In 2017, he was appointed a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for his environmental advocacy, highlighting the importance of sustainability. “I’d also like to see people reflexively consider the good of the planet in the choices they regularly make,” Weir stated in a previous interview.
