Joel Madden Shares His Regret About Not Writing Silverchair’s ‘Israel’s Son’
Joel Madden Reveals Australian Anthem He Wishes He Had Written
Joel Madden, frontman of Good Charlotte, recently expressed his admiration for an iconic Australian rock anthem during an interview on Triple M’s Homegrown with Matty O. The singer revealed that he wishes he had penned "Israel’s Son," the breakout single from Silverchair’s debut album Frogstomp, released in 1995.
When asked about his favorite Australian songs, Madden highlighted several tracks he respects before ultimately singling out "Israel’s Son." “Tomorrow would be on the list,” he added, referring to another Silverchair hit. He cited additional songs by frontman Daniel Johns, including "Straight Lines," "Slave," and "Suicidal Dreams," suggesting that a comprehensive list of Australian songs would be in order.
Madden also noted Gotye’s international smash "Somebody That I Used to Know" and the works of Crowded House before firmly choosing "Israel’s Son." “I’d love to talk to Daniel. He’s got great perspective, and he’s always been himself,” he remarked.
Originally released in 1995, "Israel’s Son" became one of Silverchair’s signature tracks, contributing to the international success of Frogstomp. The album impressively climbed to No. 9 on the Billboard 200, marking a rare achievement for an Australian rock band in the U.S. during the post-grunge era.
Madden’s reflections come as Good Charlotte prepares for an Australian tour, where he also discussed the band’s upcoming eighth studio album and the evolution of touring over the years. Throughout the interview, he expressed his deep appreciation for Australian music, declaring the country "always on the forefront of music."
Good Charlotte has their own history of Billboard success, with multiple top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. Their 2004 album The Chronicles of Life and Death peaked at No. 3, while their breakthrough 2002 release, The Young and the Hopeless, reached No. 7 on the chart.
