- Jelly Roll recalled stretching the truth about his face tattoos when his daughter Bailee was in kindergarten.
- “All of her little friends would go ‘What is all that stuff on your face?'” the musician told Taste of Country.
- Jelly Roll has previously opened up about regrets over his tattoos.
Jelly Roll reflects on his unconventional explanations regarding his face tattoos during his daughter Bailee’s early school years.
In a recent interview with Taste of Country, the country star shared details about how he navigated questions from 17-year-old Bailee’s kindergarten friends. “When she was in kindergarten it was so funny because all of her little friends would go, ‘What is all that stuff on your face?'” he recalled. He humorously replied, “You won’t believe this, I only draw this on when I come see y’all so y’all are excited about it.”
As the discussions evolved, Jelly Roll noted that the young kids were puzzled about how he maintained the same designs. “Finally, they were like, ‘How do you draw it on the same way every time?’ I said, ‘I got the little sticker things now because I’ve been coming so much,'” he explained.
However, the “Save Me” singer also acknowledged the challenges his tattoos posed as Bailee grew older. He revealed that some of her friends’ parents expressed discomfort, prohibiting their children from visiting their home.
In the cover story for Men’s Health, published earlier this month, Jelly Roll further addressed the misconceptions surrounding his body art. When questioned about his appearance being a cry for attention, he dismissed it, saying, “It’s the polar opposite.”
He elaborated, “The way shame sometimes shows itself is not always the way we expect it to be. We think shame is somebody in the streets on their knees, with their head down. But shame sometimes is pride.”

He delved deeper into his past in the interview, noting, “Behind real bravado, I can normally find shame. I can normally find guilt. I can normally find insecurity. I was the biggest, the loudest, the toughest, the meanest, the growliest, the fattest,” describing a vulnerable part of himself hidden behind his public persona. “I was that, for sure. Then a by-product of that was I got fat as f—.”
Known in real life as Jason DeFord, Jelly Roll has been undergoing a significant physical transformation, recently losing 275 pounds and shaving his face for the first time in a decade. He shared with Men’s Health that he was consistently losing between 9 and 15 pounds each month throughout the previous year.

Jelly Roll has openly discussed his regrets regarding his tattoos. In 2024, he acknowledged that he regrets getting “almost all” of them, reflecting, “Like core philosophies are rooted in my life when I was 17 and now I’m 40, I’m like, ‘What the f— was I thinking?’ I hate them all.”
The musician shared that his tattoo journey began at age 14 with a simple cross on his right arm, eventually leading to more extensive work, including facial tattoos obtained during his time in prison.
