Sewage Discharge Leads to Water Closure at Cabrillo Beach
Authorities Close Ocean Waters Around Cabrillo Beach Due to Sewage Release
San Pedro, CA – An ocean water closure was enacted around Cabrillo Beach on Thursday following the discharge of approximately 100,000 gallons of sewage into the area. This closure extends three-quarters of a mile both upstream and downstream from the beach, as reported by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health.
Public health officials are urging residents and visitors to refrain from any contact with ocean water and wet sand in the designated zones. The sewage release has contaminated both the sand and the adjacent ocean waters, prompting immediate action.
“Public Health officials are advising residents or visitors to avoid contact with ocean water and wet sand in the areas noted above,” the department stated, emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Water sampling will be conducted regularly, and the beach will remain closed until health officials confirm that bacterial levels are within safe standards.
For ongoing updates regarding beach conditions, the county’s beach closure hotline is available 24 hours a day at 1-800-525-5662.
