Kiefer Sutherland Shares How Rob Reiner Captured a Memorable Moment in A Few Good Men: ‘It Was So Quiet’

Kiefer Sutherland is honoring the legacy of Rob Reiner. In a preview from the upcoming CBS News special, CBS News: Rob Reiner — Scenes from a Life, Sutherland, 58, recounted a memorable day during the filming of A Few Good Men, which starred his costar, Jack Nicholson.
“No one said a word, and Rob went up to Jack Nicholson and whispered in his ear, ‘Do you want to do another one?’ And Jack Nicholson said, ‘Well, we’re here,'” Sutherland told CBS News in the one-hour special, set to air on Sunday, December 21. “So they did another one, and it was just as extraordinary.”
Despite plans to shoot the entire day, Reiner was so pleased with the scene that he chose to send the crew home early. Sutherland recalled, “They had planned to shoot the whole day, and Rob looked at everybody and said, ‘I couldn’t ask for anything more, so you guys all have the rest of the day off.’

The CBS News special also reflects on the lives of Rob and Michele Reiner, who died unexpectedly in their home on December 14. It features emotional interviews with notable figures including Albert Brooks, Kathy Bates, Anette Bening, Michael Douglas, Jerry O’Connell, and Mandy Patinkin.
In the aftermath of the couple’s deaths, their son Nick has been arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder. He appeared in court on December 17, wearing a blue anti-suicide smock and shackles; his arraignment is set for January 7.
Siblings Jake and Romy Reiner have spoken publicly about the profound loss they have suffered. “The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience. They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends,” the siblings said in a joint statement. “We are grateful for the outpouring of condolences, kindness, and support we have received from family and friends, as well as people from all walks of life.”
