It has been nearly half a century since Rocky made its debut in theaters. Released on December 3, 1976, the film introduced audiences to the inspiring tale of underdog boxer Rocky Balboa, portrayed by Sylvester Stallone.
Upon its release, Rocky quickly garnered acclaim, becoming one of the most successful films of 1976 and securing three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Stallone not only starred in the film but also wrote the screenplay. "Nobody wanted to make it. It was my best writing too," he remarked during a September 2023 appearance at the Toronto Film Festival.
The original Rocky has since spawned numerous sequels, including five more Rocky films and a Creed trilogy. In recognition of the 49th anniversary of its premiere, this retrospective reviews the film’s cast and their most recent appearances in the franchise.
