In a recent interview, Zayn Malik revealed his unique approach to music-making: involving his daughter, Khai, in the process to capture her honest opinions.
During a conversation on SiriusXM’s The Pulse on March 31, the former One Direction member discussed his upcoming album, Konnakol, and how he shares music with his five-year-old to gauge her reaction.
Host Joe “Brady” Blum inquired whether Zayn uses his daughter as a test audience for his new songs.
“She loves my music and she definitely gives me an opinion,” Zayn shared. “You know, she does this thing where she does like thumbs up, thumbs down, thumb sideways and if you get a thumbs up and a thumb sideways, it means it’s pretty good.”
Khai’s feedback has already influenced Zayn’s work on the album. He noted, “She gave me a double thumbs up for a few songs and there was like a side one for one or two, I think, that she wasn’t really into.”
A significant aspect of Khai’s musical influence comes from her enthusiasm for K-pop.
“She’s into TWICE. She’s into BLACKPINK,” Zayn explained. “And that was kind of, you know, a big reason behind why I did the feature with Jisoo, if I’m being honest, because my daughter’s such a big fan, and I wanted to be cool, you know.”
Last year, Zayn collaborated with Jisoo on the Billboard Hot 100 hit single “Eyes Closed,” which was released shortly after he took Khai to see BLACKPINK perform live. Reflecting on this achievement, Zayn remarked, “I got some good dad points for that,” emphasizing that he considers Khai in his creative process.
Zayn’s fifth solo studio album, Konnakol, is set to release on April 17, followed by the launch of the Konnakol Tour, marking his first headlining arena and stadium tour as a solo artist.
