Why James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane Were Left Out of the 2026 Oscars In Memoriam Segment
Following a wave of online criticism, fans have begun to understand why James Van Der Beek and Eric Dane were notably absent from the 2026 Oscars In Memoriam segment. A source has revealed to Us Weekly that the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences receives numerous requests to honor industry figures during this emotional tribute.
An “executive committee” comprised of representatives from each Academy branch is charged with reviewing the submission list. This committee makes recommendations for the televised segment while considering the limited time available.
Those who do not receive a dedicated moment during the live ceremony still have their names featured on the Oscars’ website throughout the year.
On March 15, during the ceremony held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, both Van Der Beek and Dane were glaring omissions from the tribute to deceased industry members. However, their names are included on the Oscars’ official tribute page.
Disappointment resonated among fans online, many of whom expressed their concerns about the exclusions. “I know every year, the Oscars leaves out a few people who passed away. But these 3 were so recent,” one user remarked on X, citing Van Der Beek, Dane, and Robert Carradine.
Both actors passed away mere weeks before the ceremony. Van Der Beek succumbed to colorectal cancer in February at the age of 48. His wife, Kimberly Van Der Beek, announced his passing on Instagram, stating, “Our beloved James David Van Der Beek passed peacefully this morning… For now we ask for peaceful privacy as we grieve our loving husband, father, son, brother and friend.” He is survived by Kimberly and their six children: Olivia, 15, Joshua, 14, Annabel, 12, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and Jeremiah, 4.
Dane, who was 53, also died in March following a battle with ALS. His family released a statement saying, “With heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS… Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research.” Dane is survived by his wife, Rebecca Gayheart, and their two daughters, Billie and Georgia.
As fans continue to grapple with the omissions from the tribute, the Academy’s selection process remains under scrutiny.
