Why Donald Trump Chooses Not to Wear a Bulletproof Vest After Multiple Threats
Trump Declines to Wear Bulletproof Vest Despite Assassination Attempts
In a recent Oval Office encounter, President Donald Trump stated he is not inclined to wear a bulletproof vest, even after surviving multiple assassination attempts. Addressing the issue during an event on April 30, Trump humorously noted, “I don’t know if I can handle looking 20 pounds heavier,” eliciting laughter from those present.
The discussion arose following a shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on April 25, where Trump was likely the intended target. After shots rang out in the Washington Hilton ballroom, the president and First Lady Melania Trump were quickly evacuated from the stage. While the Trumps and Vice President JD Vance were unharmed, a Secret Service agent sustained injuries. Fortunately, he was wearing a protective vest at the time. “Frankly, the vest did an amazing job because it took a bullet close up,” Trump remarked, explaining that the agent did not even want to go to the hospital after the shooting.
Trump later compared the experience of getting shot while wearing a vest to “getting hit by Mike Tyson.” The day following the incident, he lauded the vest’s effectiveness before the media, highlighting the agent’s recovery and expressing his admiration for the Secret Service.
In connection with the shooting, Cole Tomas Allen, a California native, has been apprehended and charged with attempted assassination, transportation of a firearm across state lines with the intent to commit a felony, and discharge of a firearm during a violent crime. The Justice Department confirmed he has yet to enter a plea.
Amidst the turmoil, Trump maintained a defiant posture, stating he felt “honored” to be a target. “When you look at our great presidents, [this] doesn’t happen to people who don’t do anything,” he explained.
Reflecting on the shooting event itself, Trump acknowledged his delayed response in evacuating from the ballroom. He admitted, “What happened is, it was a little bit me. I wanted to see what was happening,” suggesting that his desire to assess the situation contributed to the slower evacuation process.
As the scrutiny surrounding his security measures continues, Trump’s comments reveal a complex mix of humor, acknowledgment of risk, and a steadfast commitment to his role as president.
