Westlake Post Office Lot Cleared of Homeless Encampment
Homeless Encampment Cleared Near Downtown Los Angeles Following Resident Complaints
A homeless encampment that obstructed parts of a post office parking lot in Westlake, Los Angeles, has been dismantled after community members raised concerns. The encampment, which included tents, makeshift shelters, mattresses, and assorted belongings, had been causing disturbances for local residents and disrupting access to nearby storefronts.
Residents alerted city officials about issues arising from the encampment located near West 7th Street and Burlington Avenue, noting that piles of debris cluttered parking spaces and obstructed entrances to local businesses. “I’m worried customers will feel too unsafe to come to my shop,” Lucrecia Ramirez, a salon owner across the street from the post office, expressed in an interview last week.
The specific agency responsible for clearing the encampment has not been identified. Nevertheless, a statement from the post office confirmed that officials were aware of the situation and were exploring potential solutions.
"We would like to partner with local law enforcement, city, county, congressional personnel, and USPS authorities to find viable solutions to this growing concern," post office officials stated.
In a response to the situation, Mayor Karen Bass’s office described the circumstances as "acceptable." The mayor’s office announced that she would collaborate with the district councilperson to develop an effective resolution, noting that an outreach team had already visited the area.
