Warwick Davis Reflects on How the Harry Potter Series Captures the Essence of the Books with Added Depth and Detail
Warwick Davis Discusses Upcoming HBO ‘Harry Potter’ Series
As production continues on HBO’s anticipated Harry Potter series, Warwick Davis, who reprises his role as Professor Filius Flitwick, has shared insights about the new adaptation’s distinctiveness compared to the original films.
Davis, a BAFTA honoree and veteran of the Harry Potter franchise, emphasized that the series will feature "very faithful adaptations" of J.K. Rowling’s beloved novels. Speaking on Times Radio, he remarked, “I’m working on it at the moment, but I can’t really tell you anything other than we’re retelling those wonderful stories but with more depth and detail than has been seen before.”
Reflecting on the familiarity of the filming environment, Davis noted, “We’re obviously telling the same story so there are similar moments that we’re experiencing as actors on the set. But it’s weird being back in the same studios again, doing it all again, because Leavesden is where we shot the films.”
Davis’s association with the Harry Potter franchise began with his dual roles as Flitwick and the goblin banker Griphook in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (2001). He went on to appear in all eight film adaptations. In the new series, while Davis reprises his role as Flitwick, Leigh Gill is set to portray Griphook.
The series arrives amid ongoing controversy surrounding Rowling, who has faced backlash over her views on transgender issues from fans and former stars of the franchise. Notably, this has included public rebukes from actors and filmmakers who have also spoken out on the matter.
Rowling previously drew criticism for her support of a UK Supreme Court ruling that limits the legal recognition of trans women. In response, over 400 individuals in the film and television industries signed an open letter advocating for trans rights, which included contributions from actors such as Paapa Essiedu, cast as Professor Snape in the upcoming series.
