Golden Globes Ceremony Highlights Hollywood’s Corporate Turmoil

The Golden Globes ceremony on Sunday evening became a platform for humor amid the tumultuous landscape of Hollywood, with host Nikki Glaser delivering cutting remarks about the ongoing corporate takeover battle involving Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD). “We’ll start the bidding for Warner Bros at five dollars — do I hear five dollars?” quipped Glaser during her opening monologue.

Glaser didn’t spare David Ellison’s Paramount Skydance, the owner of CBS—broadcast network for the Globes—calling it “Americans’ newest place to ‘See BS News’” and humorously presenting it with an award for “Most Editing.”

The timing of the Globes coincided with a significant corporate struggle, as Paramount competes with Netflix in a bid for WBD, which has been up for auction for several months. The media company, led by David Zaslav, had agreed to sell its film and television studios, HBO, and HBO Max to Netflix, which is managed by Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters, while turning down Paramount’s offers. In a bold move, Paramount has launched a hostile tender offer directed at shareholders, running through January 21.

PR Battle Intensifies

As the bidding war unfolds, Warner Bros.’ board has advised shareholders to reject Paramount’s proposal, which promises $30 per share in cash and is financially backed by Larry Ellison, co-founder of Oracle. Paramount asserts its offer is the most attractive and reliable option available.

Later in the evening, Glaser made light of WBD’s dynamic situation, noting the uncertainty surrounding HBO’s branding: “Behind me is the HBO table — or whatever it will be called by the time the show ends.”

She also referenced the film Sinners, which won the Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, stating, “Singlehandedly saved Warner Bros., for about a month … but still.”

Warner Bros. experienced a successful year, with co-CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy receiving frequent mentions during the night. Paul Thomas Anderson expressed emotional gratitude for De Luca after winning Best Director for One Battle After Another. The Pitt also celebrated notable wins, contributing to Warner Bros. Discovery’s total of nine awards across HBO Max, Warner Bros. Television Group, and Warner Bros. Motion Picture Group.

Sarandos garnered praise for his work on Adolescence and KPop Demon Hunters.

In a surprising turn, former President Donald Trump indicated he would play a role in any decision regarding the bidding war. Although he has been non-committal, he has praised Ellison while expressing admiration for Sarandos. Just as the Golden Globes commenced, he seemingly sided against Netflix by sharing a cautionary commentary on Truth Social, warning of the streaming giant’s “cultural hegemony.”

Any potential deal involving WBD with either bidder is anticipated to take 12 to 18 months to finalize, leaving the landscape of Hollywood acquisitions uncertain as the industry looks ahead to the 84th Golden Globes.
