Volunteers Bring Joy to the Rose Parade, Rain or Shine
Pasadena Gears Up for Potentially Rainy Tournament of Roses Parade
PASADENA, Calif. – Residents and visitors are preparing for a unique experience at this year’s Tournament of Roses Parade, with rain anticipated for the first time since 2006. Despite weather concerns, parade organizers remain committed to moving forward as planned.
According to The Weather Channel, rain has not affected the event in nearly two decades, but that has not deterred volunteers and float managers from working tirelessly to ensure the floral displays are ready for the big day.
"It blows our mind what we’ve seen and what we’ve taken pictures of," remarked Debbie Banker, a longtime float volunteer. Each year, both experienced and new volunteers contribute to the intricate designs of the floats, meticulously painting and placing each petal and natural material. Beth Spears, who traveled from Ohio to join the effort, noted, “It’s just been a bucket list thing for several years.”
Float manager Kyle Amerine, representing Artistic Entertainment Services, highlighted the meticulous attention to detail involved in float preparation. "What people don’t realize is the amount of detail that goes into it. The pumpkin seeds that are placed ever so precisely, the beans and the seeds and the flowers — it is a true work of art."
Float design preparations can begin as early as June, with organizers ensuring that all floats can proceed along the parade route, even in adverse weather conditions. "We kind of prepare for rain whether or not it’s going to happen so we’re ready with the animation, with our staff who drive the floats. We are prepared for anything that comes our way," Amerine explained.
Spectators will be advised against bringing umbrellas along the parade route, although rain jackets and ponchos are permitted. Additionally, the City of Pasadena will close Colorado Boulevard to motorists beginning at 10 p.m. on the eve of the event, ensuring a smooth setup for parade day.
