Volodymyr Zelenskyy Shares Heartfelt Moment with Sean Penn in Ukraine After His Oscar Win: Celebrating True Friendship
Sean Penn was notably absent from the Oscars on Sunday night, where he received the Best Supporting Actor award for his performance in One Battle After Another. The acclaimed actor was instead occupied on another continent, visiting with his friend, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude to Penn in a post on X, stating, “Sean, thanks to you, we know what a true friend of Ukraine is. You have stood with Ukraine since the first day of the full-scale war. This is still true today.” The president acknowledged Penn’s unwavering support, assuring that he will continue to stand by the country.
Since the onset of the war in 2022, Penn has devoted significant time to Ukraine. In 2023, he produced Superpower, a documentary that explores Zelenskyy’s remarkable career trajectory and delves into Ukraine’s recent history.
Due to his commitment to this cause, Penn missed the opportunity to collect his Oscar in Los Angeles from last year’s recipient, Kieran Culkin. With this latest accolade, Penn joins an elite group of only four actors who have won three Oscars.
In One Battle After Another, Penn portrays the corrupt military official Steven J. Lockjaw, sharing the screen with fellow nominees Leonardo DiCaprio, Benicio Del Toro, and Teyana Taylor.
