Sonoya Mizuno Steps In as Director for Film4 and A24’s ‘Stages’
Sonoya Mizuno to Make Directorial Debut with Stages
Actress Sonoya Mizuno is set to step behind the camera for her directorial debut with a film titled Stages. The project is backed by Film4 and A24.
While specific details about Stages remain undisclosed, sources indicate that Mizuno’s personal background in dance significantly influences the narrative.
Mizuno trained at the Royal Ballet School in London and has a rich history as a professional dancer, performing with prominent companies such as the English National Ballet, Dresden Semper Oper Ballet, and Scottish Ballet.
She made her screen acting debut in Alex Garland’s acclaimed film Ex Machina, and her filmography includes notable works such as Annihilation, Crazy Rich Asians, La La Land, and Shortcomings. On television, she has taken on leading roles in Devs, as well as appearances in Maniac and House of the Dragon.
Stages will see production from Peter Rice, alongside Agile Films’ Myles Payne and Sam Ritzenberg, and Alex Garland, with whom Mizuno has established a long-standing collaborative relationship.
In discussing the creative process, Mizuno noted, “I’d say for me, a lot of the collaboration would be between me, Alex, and Rob Hardy, the DP, because this was the third thing we were doing together, the three of us. By this point, we’d developed this working relationship, which had always felt collaborative and also unique to the three of us.”
