In a stunning upset, Vista Murrieta’s softball team, under the guidance of coach Chantal Smith, handed the undefeated Murrieta Mesa its first loss of the season, defeating them 10-5 on Tuesday. The victory surprised many, as Vista Murrieta entered the game with a 10-10 record.
“I just wanted to change their mindset,” Smith stated. “We were focusing on the outcome, controlling what we could control, playing 100%, and just having fun. We had nothing to lose.”
Vista Murrieta entered the match facing a formidable opponent that had won all 20 of its previous games. The team’s resilience shone through despite an early setback.
