Ventura Police Close the 2016 Arnold Ikeda Case on Its 10th Anniversary
Ventura Police Close 2016 Murder Case of Arnold Ikeda
VENTURA, Calif. – The Ventura Police Department announced on Friday the closure of the 2016 murder case of Arnold Ikeda, marking the 10-year anniversary of his death. The department has designated Johnny Caro, who was killed in an unrelated homicide in 2021, as the sole suspect in the case.
Ikeda was found dead from a gunshot wound at his home on South Evergreen Drive on March 20, 2016. Initial investigations quickly pointed to Caro, commonly known as "Lieutenant" or "Lou," as the primary suspect. However, the lack of sufficient evidence prevented law enforcement from filing formal charges at that time.
The case remained inactive until 2021, when Caro himself was shot and killed in Desert Hot Springs. His death stalled any further legal proceedings against him, prompting a cold case review that ultimately led investigators to conclude that, while circumstantial evidence implicated Caro, the case could not progress to trial.
Ventura Police Investigations Commander Ryan Weeks expressed the department’s ongoing commitment to seeking justice for the Ikeda family. "This case has never been forgotten," Weeks stated. "Our detectives worked it extensively from the start, and years later, the DA’s Office took a deeper look through a cold case review. While this case will not proceed through the criminal justice system, we recognize the impact on Arnold Ikeda’s family and hope these findings provide some long-awaited answers."
Timeline of Events:
- March 20, 2016: Arnold Ikeda is discovered deceased in his home.
- 2016–2021: Over 20 witnesses are interviewed, and forensic tests are conducted, identifying Johnny Caro as the prime suspect.
- December 30, 2021: Johnny Caro is killed in Desert Hot Springs, leading to a suspension of the Ikeda investigation.
- February 2025: The Ventura County Cold Case Homicide Unit begins a thorough re-examination of evidence.
- March 20, 2026: The case is officially closed by exception.
While the investigation into Ikeda’s murder concludes, the homicide of Johnny Caro remains unsolved. The Ventura Police Department is currently examining 24 other active cold cases and encourages anyone with information regarding these cases to come forward.
