First Lady Melania Trump debuted her new documentary on Friday, January 30, marking a significant global theatrical release.
The film, titled Melania, was reportedly acquired by Amazon MGM Studios for approximately $40 million. According to The Wall Street Journal, as much as 70% of the purchase price may have directly benefitted the First Lady. The marketing budget for the film was set at $35 million, which notably included promotional displays featuring Melania’s image on the Las Vegas Sphere.
Additionally, Melania hosted an exclusive screening of the documentary at the White House on January 24, amidst unrest in Minneapolis following the fatal shooting of Alex Pretti. During the event, she described the screening as a “historic moment.”
The official premiere took place at the Kennedy Center on January 29, attended by a select group of the First Family’s guests. The event featured a politically charged atmosphere, with Republican lawmakers and Cabinet members discussing pressing issues such as foreign policy and budget negotiations on Capitol Hill.

At the premiere, Melania characterized the documentary as “beautiful,” “emotional,” “fashionable,” and “cinematic.” It eschews traditional talking-head interviews in favor of extensive voiceovers by Melania herself.
Directed by the controversial filmmaker Brett Ratner, the documentary provides a selective look at the weeks leading up to the January 20, 2025 inauguration. It includes footage of Melania preparing for her inaugural outfits and strategizing her role with other political spouses during the events surrounding her husband’s second swearing-in ceremony.
Among the noteworthy moments in Melania are significant musical selections. During teasers leading up to the film, Melania unveiled her careful selection of music, emphasizing its role in visual storytelling. She remarked, “Visual storytelling and beautiful music create memories for a lifetime,” recalling the emotional connections that songs elicit.
The opening scene incorporates “Gimme Shelter” by the Rolling Stones, a band known for its historical ties to Donald Trump. Melania’s favorite musical artist, Michael Jackson, is featured prominently, with “Billie Jean” accompanying her travel from Mar-a-Lago to New York City for inauguration preparations.
The film also highlights Melania’s fittings for her inaugural attire. She expresses satisfaction with her outfits, stating, “Very my colors, black and white. Very me,” upon seeing her black-and-white inaugural ball dress. Melania often communicated positively with designers about various choices, although her distinctive wide-brimmed inauguration hat quickly became an internet sensation due to its unique style and the way it obscured her face in photographs.

The documentary also touches on her relationship with her son, Barron Trump, who is 18 during the filming. While he is mentioned minimally throughout the film, Melania highlights her pride in him. She recalls moments from his childhood, such as swim lessons with her father and reflects on her concerns for his safety after the challenges their family faced in 2024.
Notably, the film does not delve into Melania’s interactions with Donald Trump’s older children from previous marriages; the focus remains primarily on her immediate family and her reactions to significant political events.
This documentary release has sparked dialogue regarding Amazon MGM Studios’ substantial $40 million investment, the largest for a documentary in the company’s history. Melania’s senior adviser and agent, Marc Beckman, addressed concerns over potential political implications surrounding the deal, specifying that the offer was competitive, involving discussions with other major studios.
The film further captures poignant moments, such as Melania’s reflection at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral on January 9, 2025. This significant date served as a reminder of her own mother’s passing one year prior and further contributed to the film’s emotional depth.
As the documentary unfolds, viewers also witness Melania seeking advice from notable political figures to inform her initiatives as First Lady, demonstrating her proactive approach to her new role.
Overall, Melania highlights pivotal aspects of the First Lady’s life and responsibilities amid the backdrop of a politically charged landscape, capturing both personal and political moments leading up to the inauguration of her husband, Donald Trump.
