Trump Supports Steve Hilton’s Campaign for California Governor
Trump Endorses Steve Hilton in California Gubernatorial Race
President Donald Trump has officially endorsed former Fox News host Steve Hilton for the governorship of California, announcing his support on social media late Sunday night. Hilton is one of two prominent Republican candidates vying for the position, which will be left vacant as current Governor Gavin Newsom is unable to seek another term.
In his post on Truth Social, Trump expressed confidence in Hilton’s ability to lead California, stating, "With Federal help, and a Great Governor, like Steve Hilton, California can be better than ever before!" He further added, "Steve Hilton has my COMPLETE & TOTAL ENDORSEMENT. He will be a GREAT Governor and, importantly, WILL NEVER LET YOU DOWN!!!"
This endorsement comes at a time when Democrats are increasingly concerned about maintaining control of the governor’s office. Under California’s "top-two" primary system, all candidates will appear on the ballot regardless of party affiliation, with the two candidates receiving the most votes advancing to the November election. This system could potentially allow two Republicans to compete in the run-off if Democratic votes are too fragmented among their candidates.
A recent poll conducted by the UC Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies revealed that Hilton and Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco lead the Republican field, with Hilton garnering 17% support and Bianco close behind at 16%.
On the Democratic side, the race includes eight major candidates: former U.S. Health Secretary and former California Attorney General Xavier Becerra, San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan, former U.S. Representative Katie Porter, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, billionaire businessman Tom Steyer, former state Controller Betty Yee, U.S. Representative Eric Swalwell, and state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond. The same poll indicated that Swalwell and Porter each have 13% support, but other surveys suggest a lack of a clear front-runner, with many voters still undecided.
The primary election is scheduled for June 2, setting the stage for a pivotal moment in California’s political landscape.
