Trial Begins for Former Dodger Yasiel Puig in Illegal Sports Betting Case
Former Dodgers Outfielder Yasiel Puig on Trial for Obstruction of Justice
Jurors were selected on Tuesday for the federal trial of former Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, who faces charges of lying to investigators regarding his alleged involvement in an illegal sports betting operation.
The 35-year-old Puig, who played six seasons with the Los Angeles Dodgers and last appeared in Major League Baseball in 2019 with the Cincinnati Reds and Cleveland Indians, is charged with obstruction of justice and making false statements. His career also included stints in South Korea, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and Venezuela.
The 12-member jury, along with two alternates, reconvened in downtown Los Angeles following a recess. Opening statements are anticipated later today.
The federal charges against Puig are linked to a 2017 investigation into a gambling operation allegedly run by former minor league pitcher Wayne Nix. Prosecutors claim that Nix, who is accused of laundering illicit proceeds, led authorities to Puig after the investigation revealed Puig’s betting activities.
According to federal investigators, Puig began placing illegal bets in May 2019, accumulating a debt of $282,000 to Nix’s operation by June of that year. From July 4 to September 29, 2019, prosecutors allege he placed an additional 899 bets on tennis, football, and basketball through various betting websites.
In January 2022, Puig was interviewed by federal investigators as part of the broader inquiry. Prosecutors assert that he provided false information, denying any connection to Nix or knowledge about the gambling business.
Puig initially reached a plea deal in August 2022 but later reneged, leading to the current charges. He had agreed to plead guilty to one count of making false statements and to pay a fine of at least $55,000. "I want to clear my name," Puig said at the time. "I never should have agreed to plead guilty to a crime I did not commit."
In a statement on X in August 2025, Puig indicated, "This story isn’t over yet, and you weren’t told the full story the first time."
If convicted, Puig could face a prison sentence of ten years or more. Legal analyst Royal Oakes commented on the case, stating, "This case is strange in the sense that Puig doesn’t deny he was a big gambler. He placed hundreds of bets and lost almost $300,000, but he is being charged with lying to the feds when they asked about his contacts with bookies."
Wayne Nix has pleaded guilty to charges related to operating an illegal sports gambling business and making false tax statements, and he is currently awaiting sentencing.
