President Donald Trump addressed the nation on December 17, presenting a detailed account of his first year back in office. The speech, delivered from the White House, highlighted what he described as the major accomplishments of his administration and outlined his plans for 2026.
During his remarks, Trump asserted that prior to the start of his second term, America was “laughed at from all over the world” but is now respected. He claimed that his administration has enacted “more positive change to Washington than any administration in American history” during the past 11 months.
“In other words, in a few short months, we went from worst to best,” Trump stated. He emphasized efforts to deport criminals and restore safety in America’s cities, particularly referencing improved security in Washington, D.C., which he attributed to the deployment of National Guard troops over the summer.
On healthcare, Trump advocated for Americans to purchase their own insurance, saying it would provide better benefits at lower costs. He criticized the Affordable Care Act, labeling it the “Unaffordable Care Act,” and contended it was designed to enrich insurance companies. “It was bad health care at much too higher cost,” he declared, placing the blame for rising premiums squarely on Democrats.
Hours before his speech, the House of Representatives passed a health care bill that did not extend tax credits associated with the Affordable Care Act, leading to tensions among party members. Additionally, Trump announced a “warrior dividend” of $1,776 for 1.45 million military service members, intended to be disbursed before Christmas.
The address came amid economic uncertainties, with new government data indicating a mere 64,000 jobs were added in November and unemployment climbing to 4.6%, the highest since September 2021. Although Trump has stated that inflation is decreasing, other data suggest it has been gradually rising since a drop in April.
Trump’s speech was announced just a day prior, prompting major broadcast networks, including ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, to rearrange their primetime schedules to facilitate the live address. CBS deferred its Survivor finale, while FOX adjusted scheduled programming for The Floor.
Both ABC and NBC had previously planned holiday shows, but ABC paused its concert special to broadcast the speech, which NBC covered before resuming their own program.
The timing of Trump’s address drew attention as the deadline for releasing the Epstein files looms, with the Department of Justice expected to publish unclassified records related to the investigation by December 19. Although Trump previously resisted the release of these files, he recently encouraged Republicans to support their disclosure.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt had previewed the speech, stating it would highlight the administration’s “historic accomplishments” over the past year. “He’s going to talk a lot about the accomplishments over the past 11 months,” she noted.
