WILMINGTON, DE – A shooting at a DMV office in Wilmington on Tuesday resulted in the deaths of a Delaware State Police trooper and the suspected gunman. Authorities confirmed that there is no longer an active shooter situation at the Hessler Boulevard location.
Delaware State Police reported that the incident began when a 44-year-old suspect entered the DMV. The shooter approached Corporal Grade One Matthew "Ty" Snook, 34, and opened fire, injuring the officer. Despite being wounded, Snook managed to push a DMV employee to safety before sustaining another gunshot wound. Officers responded swiftly, fatally shooting the suspect.
In a statement, Governor Matt Meyer labeled the shooting “an act of pure evil,” commending the bravery of the police and emergency personnel for their quick actions that prevented further harm.
Corporal Snook was acknowledged as a dedicated community member who served with honor. Colonel William Crotty expressed profound grief, stating, "We lost a brother, a son, a best friend, a coach, a husband and a father."
In addition to the fatal injuries, police reported three others sustained injuries during the incident. One trooper suffered a non-gunshot-related injury, while a 40-year-old woman was hospitalized for minor injuries.
