Trial Begins in Trader Joe’s Standoff That Led to Tragic Loss of Life
Opening Statements Underway in Trader Joe’s Standoff Trial
Criminal proceedings commenced Monday in the case against Gene Atkins, who faces multiple charges stemming from a deadly standoff at a Trader Joe’s in Silver Lake in 2018. The incident resulted in the tragic death of Melyda "Mely" Corado, an assistant manager at the store, who was struck by a bullet fired by an LAPD officer during the confrontation.
Prosecutors have presented their opening statements, emphasizing the sequence of events that led to the standoff. They outlined a distressing narrative in which Atkins is alleged to have shot and wounded both his grandmother and girlfriend before leading police on a pursuit that ended at the Trader Joe’s location.
On July 21, 2018, Atkins crashed his vehicle into a pole and ran into the store, where he allegedly began firing at responding officers and held hostages. According to prosecutors, it was a round from an LAPD officer’s weapon that ultimately struck Corado.
Atkins faces more than 40 counts related to the incident, including murder, attempted murder, and multiple counts of false imprisonment. Prosecutors argue that his conduct set in motion the tragic events that culminated in Corado’s death.
Legal analyst Royal Oakes noted the unique nature of the charges, explaining, "The unusual aspect about this case is that the defendant is being charged with murder, even though he’s not the one that fired the shot that killed the innocent victim. Instead, he’s charged with something called felony murder, meaning if you set in motion a series of events by felonious terrible conduct, then if somebody else shoots, you’re charged with murder."
In a related development from 2024, Corado’s family settled a wrongful death lawsuit against the city for nearly $10 million. The Los Angeles Police Commission ruled that the officer who discharged his weapon acted within departmental policy during the crisis.
In a sworn statement provided to the court, the officer described the situation as dire, asserting that he had no other option but to discharge his weapon to neutralize a threat created by Atkins. He mentioned that gunfire from Atkins had compelled officers to take cover, thereby escalating the urgency of their response.
As the trial advances, jurors are set to hear from additional witnesses in the forthcoming weeks, including individuals who were present at the Trader Joe’s during the standoff.
