Tom Holland Hints at a More Mature Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day at CinemaCon
Sony has provided a first look at Spider-Man: Brand New Day during CinemaCon, showcasing an exclusive scene from the eagerly awaited installment in the franchise.
The clip features Peter Parker, portrayed by Tom Holland, in disguise and feeling isolated from his friends. He spots his buddy Ned (Jacob Batalon) at a house party and discreetly follows him inside. In an unexpected encounter, Ned reveals his “Spider-Man board” to Peter, oblivious to the fact that he is speaking to the superhero himself. He expresses admiration for Spider-Man, mentioning how the hero has saved him and his friends multiple times in high school, and shares a hope of meeting him one day.
The scene takes an emotional turn with the arrival of Zendaya’s character, MJ, who kisses a new love interest right in front of Peter, highlighting the personal repercussions of his previous decisions from the last film.
Set four years after the successful Spider-Man: No Way Home, which grossed over $1.9 billion globally, Brand New Day explores Peter Parker’s life as a solitary Spider-Man. This new chapter unfolds in the aftermath of a multiverse-altering event that has erased everyone’s memory of him, leading to mounting pressures and the emergence of a formidable new adversary.
During the presentation at CinemaCon, Sony’s Tom Rothman described the film as “as big as anything we’ve ever made,” yet noted that it feels distinct from previous projects. Rothman praised Tom Holland’s performance, referring to it as his “finest work,” and introduced a virtual version of Holland, who participated in a pre-recorded interaction.
Holland himself characterized the film as “big and fun and cool,” while also calling it “the most emotional Spider-Man, and in some ways, the most grown up.”
The film will feature a series of familiar faces, including Jon Bernthal reprising his role as Frank Castle, aka The Punisher, Michael Mando as Scorpion, and Mark Ruffalo returning as Bruce Banner, aka Hulk. Jacob Batalon and Zendaya are set to return as Ned and MJ, respectively, while Trammell Tillman and Sadie Sink will join the cast, with Sink’s role yet to be revealed.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, Spider-Man: Brand New Day is slated for release on July 31, produced by Kevin Feige, Amy Pascal, Avi Arad, and Rachel O’Connor.
