“He was my soulmate. The time we spent together… it wasn’t enough for me,” Claire shared in a 2024 interview with OnMilwaukee.
The film, based on a 2008 documentary of the same name, chronicles the couple’s ups and downs over their 17-year career and 12-year marriage. Jackman noted in a 2025 interview with Variety, “You find him 20 years sober, but life is a battle, and what’s holding it is this dream.”
Despite the challenges they faced, Claire expressed gratitude for the film project. “I’m honored. I’m overwhelmed. I’m excited,” she remarked in 2024.
Hudson also reflected on the film’s significance, stating, “Having Neil Diamond’s music as the backdrop to play these real-life people was wonderful… you walk away feeling inspired.”

Mike, a Vietnam veteran, and Claire Sardina were a musical duo known as Lightning & Thunder.
They began performing together in 1989 and gained popularity in the Midwest for their renditions of Neil Diamond songs and other hits from artists like Blondie, ABBA, and Patsy Cline.
Their performance of “Forever in Blue Jeans” alongside Pearl Jam in Milwaukee in 1995 is particularly notable.

The duo became more widely recognized with the 2008 release of Song Sung Blue, a documentary that showcased their life and career.
Claire described the film as a deep exploration of their experiences: “It gets very intense.”
How Did They Meet?
According to reports, Claire auditioned for Mike’s band, Positive Traction, in 1987. Two years later, he invited her to join a new project focused on Neil Diamond’s music.
Recalling their first meeting, Claire shared, “He calls me on the phone… and says, ‘Hey, I’m coming back into town, how would you like to do something?’”
She picked Mike up from the airport on April 11, 1989. Their professional relationship quickly blossomed into a romantic one, leading them to wed at the 1994 Milwaukee State Fair in front of approximately 1,000 fans.
Challenges They Faced

Off-stage, the Sardinas encountered numerous health challenges, including a heart attack suffered by Mike in 1998.
In May 1999, Claire was struck by a runaway vehicle in her front yard, resulting in severe injuries. “An 80-year-old man was driving, and he first hit a parked car,” she recounted, explaining the circumstances that led to her injury and eventual amputation.
Despite undergoing multiple surgeries, Claire returned to performing within three months, stating, “God didn’t take away my voice.”
The couple continued to perform together until Mike’s death in 2006 at age 55, after a fall at home. He was remembered as being 25 years sober at the time of his passing.
Two years posthumously, Claire met Neil Diamond, expressing to him, “My husband lived and died for this moment.”
Where Are They Now?

Claire continues to perform as part of a duo named Thunder After Lightning with singing partner Toney Luciano. “I can now dance after all these years and I can still sing,” she reported.
In May 2025, she and Mike were honored with a WAMI Lifetime Achievement Award.
Claire actively participated in the promotion of Song Sung Blue, attending its Milwaukee premiere on December 2, 2025, alongside her daughter Rachel, and later at the New York premiere where she expressed pride in her accomplishments over the years.
