Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir Share the Story Behind Their Special Matching Birkin Bags from Tokyo
Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir Showcase Matching Birkin Bags on Podcast
Olympic figure skaters Tara Lipinski and Johnny Weir turned heads during a recent episode of the “Chicks in the Office” podcast, where they proudly displayed their matching Hermès Birkin bags. The episode aired on March 10, and a clip posted on TikTok highlighted the duo showcasing their elegant ivory purses and sharing the story behind their coordinated fashion choice.
"Funny story," Weir began, recounting his long-standing interest in collecting Birkin bags. "It’s the one thing I understand as far as an investment is concerned. If I ever need them, they’re sitting there." He added humorously, “It’s an investment! I don’t sell them though.” Weir noted that during the Tokyo Olympics, he visited an Hermès sales associate in the Ginza store, and Lipinski joined him for the experience. Despite her initial hesitations about purchasing such a luxurious item, she expressed intrigue after witnessing the Birkin selection process.
“Wow, this is fancy,” Lipinski recalled, describing a moment when chocolates were presented to her in the store. "I was like, ‘Oh my goodness.’” Captivated, she decided that she wanted a Birkin bag that would match Weir’s.
Weir shared that in Japan, stores typically receive a limited number of bags in specific colors, mentioning that the shade they selected was a seasonal color. "My guy was able to source [another] one. There were like six of this color in the whole country," he explained.
Fans took to social media, expressing their admiration for the pair’s fashionable moment. One user commented, "It’s giving ‘that’s my best friend, go best friend’ 💙," while another praised them as “ICONIC BESTIES.”
Lipinski and Weir further showcased their camaraderie on Instagram, sharing a reel in which they twirled their Birkins while donning matching ivory outfits. Lipinski captioned the post, “It started with matching outfits…now we’re just becoming the same person. It’s better this way.”
