Sylmar High School Spartans Secure Wins with Dominant Pitching
In a week marked by impressive performances, Sylmar High School coach Ray Rivera is celebrating as both his favorite Major League team, the San Francisco Giants, and his high school team, the Spartans, achieved significant victories. The Giants bested the Los Angeles Dodgers twice, showcasing stellar pitching, while the Spartans swept Sun Valley Poly in a two-game series, enhancing their lead in the Valley Mission League.
Sylmar’s pitchers have displayed remarkable effectiveness, not allowing a single run across 14 innings during the week. Matthew Torres achieved a no-hitter against Poly on Monday, followed by Alex Martinez, who was instrumental in Thursday’s 10-0 triumph over Parrots, throwing six shutout innings, yielding just three hits, and striking out five batters.
Tim Sepulveda contributed offensively for Sylmar with three hits in the game, helping the team improve to a record of 17-6, with a commendable 10-1 mark in league play.
In other notable games, Verdugo Hills defeated San Fernando with a score of 10-4, where Anthony Velasquez excelled, hitting a two-run double and finishing with three RBIs. El Camino Real triumphed over Chatsworth with a 5-1 result, led by Ryan Glassman with two hits and two RBIs, while Hudson December allowed only one hit over five innings.
In further matchups, Taft defeated Cleveland 5-2, with Victor Jara’s two-run single paving the way for victory. Bell emerged victorious over Garfield 3-1, highlighted by Jayden Rojas, who struck out six in six innings.
In a notable pitching performance, Logan Stein threw a one-hit shutout as Alta Loma claimed a 2-0 win against South Hills. Thousand Oaks edged Westlake 4-3, thanks to Preston Lee’s RBI single that broke a tie in the seventh inning. Oaks Christian rallied against Agoura, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh to secure a 6-5 win, with Ryan Sheffer and KJ Henrich both contributing crucial hits. Tyler Starling also homered for Agoura in the match.
Villa Park shut out La Serna 4-0, with Logan Hoppie striking out six in six innings, while Aliso Niguel defeated San Clemente 3-1, bolstered by Chad Alderman’s complete game and Henry Drews’ three hits.
In softball action, Anaheim Canyon triumphed 4-1 over Garden Grove Pacifica, with Kelsey Perez striking out 11 batters. Carson’s narrow win against San Pedro, finishing 4-3, saw Ashannalee Titialii with two hits and Simi Mafoe hitting a home run. Chaminade also secured a 7-4 victory against Sierra Canyon, led by Siena Greenlinger, who recorded two hits and two RBIs.
