Steve Kerr signs two-year extension to continue coaching the Warriors
Steve Kerr to Continue as Head Coach of Golden State Warriors
SAN FRANCISCO — Steve Kerr is set to extend his tenure with the Golden State Warriors, having reached an agreement in principle on a two-year contract. A source familiar with the negotiations confirmed that although Kerr has yet to sign the deal, the contract’s finalization is expected soon.
This decision comes after a challenging season for the Warriors, who finished with a 37-45 record and missed the playoffs for the second time in three years. They secured the 10th seed in the Western Conference but were eliminated by the Phoenix Suns in the play-in tournament.
Kerr, who has led the franchise for 12 years, boasts an impressive record that includes four championships and six consecutive NBA Finals appearances alongside stars Stephen Curry and Draymond Green. Following the season-ending loss to Phoenix, Kerr embraced Curry and Green, recognizing it might be their final game together.
The Warriors faced numerous challenges this season, including key injuries. Notably, Jimmy Butler suffered a season-ending right knee injury in January, while Curry missed 27 games due to his own knee issue.
Kerr first assumed the head coaching role with the Warriors in 2014-15 and immediately led the team to its first championship in 40 years. The following season, the Warriors achieved a record 24-0 start under assistant coach Luke Walton while Kerr missed the initial 43 games due to complications from back surgeries. He also took a leave of absence in 2017 for treatment of a spinal fluid leak.
Draymond Green had predicted on his podcast after the season that Kerr would not return, raising questions about the coach’s future with the team.
Apart from his coaching achievements, Kerr has utilized his platform to address issues like gun violence and social justice. He has spoken openly about these topics, influenced by personal experiences, including the loss of his father, Malcolm, who was killed in Beirut when Kerr was just 18.
As Kerr enters the next chapter of his coaching career, his dual role as a coach and public figure remains a significant aspect of his identity. He believes the current environment underscores the importance of speaking out on pressing social issues.
The details of Kerr’s new contract were first reported by ESPN.
