Steve Carell’s ‘Rooster’ Is HBO’s Most Popular Comedy Debut in Over Ten Years
HBO’s ‘Rooster’ Debuts Strong with 2.4 Million Viewers
HBO’s latest comedy series, Rooster, created by the team behind Scrubs, Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses, has made a notable impact since its premiere. The show, starring Steve Carell, attracted 2.4 million U.S. viewers across all platforms within its first three days. This marks Rooster as HBO’s most-watched comedy debut in nearly 11 years, overshadowing the June 2015 launch of The Brink.
Despite having only one season, The Brink similarly featured prominent actors like Jack Black and Tim Robbins. The presence of well-known stars tends to generate stronger initial viewership for comedies, especially compared to creator-driven shows, which often take longer to build an audience.
In a positive development for Rooster, its viewership has increased by four times since its premiere night.
On the same night, following Rooster, HBO’s limited series DTF St. Louis experienced a 12% rise in audience, pulling in 2.8 million U.S. viewers for its second episode.
Set on a college campus, Rooster explores the complexities of an author’s (played by Carell) relationship with his daughter, portrayed by Charly Clive. The cast also includes Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai, with Connie Britton appearing in a recurring role.
Lawrence and Tarses serve as co-showrunners and executive producers alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer from Doozer, as well as Jonathan Krisel, Barbie Adler, Annie Mebane, David Stassen, Anthony King, David Hyman, and Steve Carell. The series is produced by Warner Bros. Television, where both Doozer and Tarses have ongoing overall deals.
