Jelly Roll, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Chrissy Teigen have been announced as judges for Netflix’s upcoming reboot of Star Search, as revealed by the streaming platform on Tuesday.
Hosted by Anthony Anderson, the revised series is set to premiere on January 20 on Netflix. Episodes will air live on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 9 p.m. ET/6 p.m. PT, featuring real-time voting that allows viewers to influence which contestants advance in the competition. A teaser trailer has been released, showcasing the show’s exciting format.
According to the official logline, the new Star Search promises to deliver a grander talent showcase with heightened stakes and a more interactive experience. Each episode will present standout emerging performers across various categories, including music, dance, variety, comedy, magic, and junior talent, as they compete for their shot at stardom. The series features an arced competition structure with weekly eliminations and global voting, fostering dramatic tension and anticipation for each live episode.
The original Star Search, hosted by Ed McMahon, aired from 1983 to 1995 and played a pivotal role in launching the careers of notable stars such as Beyoncé, Adam Sandler, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, Dave Chappelle, and Christina Aguilera. A reboot of the series was attempted in 2003 on CBS with Arsenio Hall as host, but it was canceled after just one season.
Jason Raff, known for his work on America’s Got Talent, and David Friedman, from Bring the Funny, will serve as showrunners. The new incarnation of Star Search is produced by Jesse Collins Entertainment, which is recognized for productions such as Rhythm + Flow, the Primetime Emmys, and the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Executive producers include Jesse Collins, Dionne Harmon, Madison Merritt, Elaine Metaxas, Taraji P. Henson, and Steve Mosko.
