Southern California Braces for an Unusually Warm Winter: Here’s What You Should Know
Weather Forecast: Unseasonable Heat Wave to Impact Southern California
LOS ANGELES — A significant high-pressure system has settled over Southern California, ushering in an unseasonable "winter heat wave" that is expected to set new temperature records this week. The National Weather Service (NWS) has forecast temperatures soaring 20 to 30 degrees above seasonal norms, affecting millions from the coast to the desert.
The heat wave is anticipated to peak on Thursday and Friday, with high temperatures projected to reach 99°F in coastal valleys and 98°F in the Coachella Valley. Coastal regions and valley areas may experience highs ranging from 85°F to 99°F. According to the NWS, these extreme temperatures come on the heels of a pattern shift in local wind conditions, leading to a drastic rise in thermometer readings.
The NWS has issued heat advisories across the region, warning that the intense heat could pose risks, especially to vulnerable populations lacking proper cooling or hydration resources. The agency stated that approximately 16.8 million residents could be affected, urging that this heat should be treated as a significant health event as multiple March records are likely to be broken.
As the week progresses, strong Santa Ana winds will begin to develop on Wednesday and Thursday, with gusts reaching between 30 to 45 mph in areas such as the 5 Freeway corridor, Los Angeles, and Ventura counties. These winds may create hazardous driving conditions for high-profile vehicles.
While Friday will mark the height of the heat, Saturday is also expected to remain dangerously warm, with temperatures ranging between 82°F and 96°F across coastal and valley areas. The NWS notes that the peak of the heat may pass by the weekend, but temperatures are predicted to remain above normal into the following week.
Residents are advised to modify their plans to avoid strenuous outdoor activities, stay hydrated, and check on neighbors who may need assistance during this heat event. Additionally, securing loose outdoor items in anticipation of gusty winds is recommended.
